WSI Events

WSI Members can participate in numerous exhibits which bring their artwork to members of the public. Each year WSI sponsors a Membership Exhibit and a Juried Exhibit. Both exhibits limit entry to WSI members and allow works to be for sale.

  • The Membership Exhibit promotes the work of our members by enabling each member to exhibit one painting.
  • The Juried Exhibit engages a well-respected national artist to serve as the selection and awards juror. Each member may submit two works to be considered for the Juried Exhibit. Prizes of up to $2,000 and total purse of $10,000 have been awarded in the past.

Other exhibitions take place periodically, most recently at the Henry County Art Association in 2020 and the upcoming Hamilton County exhibit in the fall of 2021. Each exhibit publishes a prospectus which details the dates, eligibility and rules for the exhibit.

Workshops & Education

The Watercolor Society of Indiana seeks to educate Indiana residents about the discipline of the watercolor medium through exhibits, juried competitions, classes, discussions, demonstrations, outreach programs, and community service.

Several WSI Members teach in schools as well as various art venues. WSI provides educational demonstrations to our members as a benefit for being a WSI Member. The offices of WSI houses a lending library for WSI Members. Friends and Members have donated more than three hundred books on watercolors, techniques, and visual arts.

WSI was the recipient of the James C. Lentz Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2010 which provides $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to high school seniors who intend to pursue a college degree in the visual arts. In 2021, WSI awarded the James C. Lentz  Scholarship to Alexis Carter. Alexis will attend Parsons School of Design in New York, NY. The Lentz Fund also contributes to the James C. Lentz Memorial Award, which is given annually to an artist chosen by the exhibit’s juror.

2021 includes four workshops offered by WSI. The first virtual 2-day workshop in February 2021, Explore Landscapes and Greens, was taught by WSI Member Dale Popovich, IWS. Followed by a second virtual workshop, Value and Light, by WSI Signature and Founding Member Stephen Edwards. Our first in-person workshop in over a year was presented by Paul Jackson, AWS-DF, NWS in July 2021. This 4-day workshop focused on Light and Luminosity in Watercolor. The second in-person, 3-day workshop, Capture Light and Atmosphere in Watercolor, with returning artist Keiko Tanabe, takes place in October 2021.

The Watercolor Society of Indiana looks to offer more virtual and regional workshops in 2022 throughout the state of Indiana. WSI truly appreciates and extends many thanks to the donors and members who contribute to these educational activities.  We are very much looking forward to sharing watercolors, growth, and new opportunities with the residents of Indiana in 2022.  Visit our Workshops Page to learn more.
